Our traditional oilskin / waxed canvas 3x3m (10x10ft) field tarp / shelter, made in Australia from the last remaining Australian made oilskin cotton canvas - built with a combination of vegetable tanned Kangaroo leather reinforcing gussets on four corners and triple folded canvas gussets on the remaining eyelet points. Finished with an Australian made ex-military cotton webbing strap, Australian made brass eyelets & matching oilskin drawstring carry sack.

Oilskin fabric was historically used by sailors to create waterproof clothing & tarpaulins from old cotton canvas sails, dipped in a secret mix of oils. In late 2024 after several decades of proud Australian oilskin manufacturing in New South Wales, production abruptly ended due to difficult economic conditions. Kohutt was able to secure the last remaining rolls of genuine Australian made 100% cotton oilskin canvas as the doors shuttered forever - leaving you with an extremely unique and likely irreplaceable piece of Australian history & equipment!
Not only does our oilskin tell a story, but even the eyelets on our rugs & blankets have a unique tale too: Manufactured in outer Melbourne, Australia, our eyelets are made inside a factory which still stamps with their original machinery, built over 100 years ago & converted from steam to electric.
Shelter design
Our shelter design includes a twin needle lap seam down the centre ridge - the lap seam provides a very strong, neat and waterproof ridge line using a dedicated lap seaming machine unique to Kohutt's tarp design & manufacture. This ultra strong seam includes square leather gussets with cotton webbing loops approximately every 1m for suspending the tarp from the center-line. The tarp perimeter has a combination of leather re-enforcing gussets & triple folded canvas gussets with brass eyelets approximately every 1m.
