🚢 Ready to Ship

A compact roll-up sleeping system for motorcycle touring, bikepacking, bushcraft and minimalist bush camping. Lighter and smaller than a traditional swag. No mattress included by design. Pair with the Mariners Roll Mat, or bring your own.

The Western Tiers Bedroll is Kohutt's take on the traditional cowboy bedroll, re-imagined for the Australian bush, built for people who've always found the standard swag too bulky, too heavy, and too much to carry far.

It runs deliberately smaller than most swags on the market. Compact when rolled, self-contained, and designed to go where a standard swag won't: strapped to a bike, thrown in a ute tray, carried on a pack frame.

Made entirely in our Tasmanian workshop from 100% Australian-manufactured canvas, either oilskin or heavyweight dry waxed depending on the variant. Every stitch is our own. Every detail, from the brass eyelets to the YKK zippers to the mariners hooks, is specified for durability and field repairability.

The extended rain cover runs across the face of the roll. Brass eyelets on all four corners and centred at the head allow a stick or length of dowel to tension the cover in wet conditions. The head pillow pocket sits at the top of the roll. Twin cotton straps with aluminium mariners hooks keep it closed and compress the roll for carrying.

There is no insulation built in. The bedroll is a shell. It works with whatever you sleep in or under. A wool blanket inside, the Anchorwatch over the top, and the Mariners Roll Mat underneath is a complete, comfortable three-season setup for most of Australia.

Canvas variants

Oilskin canvas — 100% pure cotton with a traditional oilskin treatment. Oily to the touch, water-resistant by nature, and the material with the longest history in Australian outdoor use. Manufactured in New South Wales. Production of Australian oilskin ceased in 2024. Our stock is finite. Colours vary slightly roll to roll; this is the nature of the material, not a defect.

Dry waxed canvas — A polycotton blended canvas with a dry waterproofing treatment. Slightly heavier and stiffer than the oilskin. Less oily to handle.

Both variants are 100% Australian-manufactured.

Hardware and construction

  • Polycotton thread throughout
  • 2.1kg (4.6lbs) (oilskin) & 2.2kg (4.8lbs) (dry canvas)
  • Oilskin rolled up: 47x13x13cm (18.5″×5.1″×5.1″)
  • Dry canvas rolled up: 47x14x14cm (19.7″×5.9″×5.9″)
  • Laid flat overall dimensions 221x92cm (87.0″×36.2″)
  • Laid flat internal dimensions from top of pillow to foot: 205×80cm (80.7″×31.5″)

Conditions guidance Comfortable to approximately 10 to 12°C with a mid-weight wool blanket inside. For colder conditions, add the Anchorwatch oilskin blanket as a top layer. The bedroll is a shell. Warmth is determined entirely by what you bring inside it.

Care

Oilskin: Spot clean only. Do not machine wash or dry clean. Re-proof periodically with a wax-based reproofing agent. We offer an optional care kit at checkout. Store loosely rolled or flat. Avoid prolonged compression.

Dry waxed canvas: Spot clean. Brush off dry mud when the material is dry. The wax treatment will soften and redistribute with heat and use. This is normal. Re-proof as needed with a dry wax product.

Both canvases will patina with use. This is not deterioration. It is the material settling into service.

The complete sleep system

The Western Tiers Bedroll pairs with:

Mariners Roll Mat — A canvas camp mat sized to fit the internal dimensions of the bedroll. Fireside mat, vehicle mat, or standalone ground pad. The natural bedroll companion.

Oilskin Field Tarp — Full overhead shelter. The 3×3 is sized for a solo bedroll setup with room to sit up and cook under cover.

Anchorwatch Oilskin Blanket — Waxed canvas and wool. Goes inside the bedroll for warmth, over the top for weather, or doubles as a camp blanket independently.

All three are available separately. If you're ordering more than one piece, Batch Benefits applies automatically at checkout.

Guarantee and repairs

Every Kohutt piece is guaranteed for life against manufacturing defects and comes with free repairs. This is not a marketing claim. It is practical: we build everything ourselves, we know how every piece is constructed, and we can fix it if it fails. If the zipper goes, an eyelet pulls, or a seam opens after years of use, send it back. We'll repair it.
